Days after Diljit Dosanjh announced his film Punjab ’95 will be released internationally next month, the Punjabi singer-actor said Monday it will not be released worldwide.

Last Friday, Diljit Dosanjh announced that the movie, which had run into trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), will be released for international audiences on February 7. Dosanjh also shared the teaser of the much-anticipated film, directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala.

“We are very Sorry and it Pains us to inform you that The movie Punjab ’95 will not Release on 7th Feb due to Circumstances Beyond our Control,” said his team and Honey Trehan, the film’s producer, Monday on Instagram.

Punjab ’95 is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who exposed the Punjab Police’s extra-judicial killings of Sikh men during the militancy in the late 90s. He was kidnapped in 1995 and murdered. Later, six Punjab Police officers were convicted of kidnapping and murdering him.

After the Censor Board proposed 120 cuts to the film, Khalra’s wife Paramjit Kaur Khalra said the biopic on her husband’s life was made with the family’s consent and should be released without any cuts.

According to his wife, her family had read the script over four years ago and granted permission to director Honey Trehan to make the movie with Dosanjh portraying Khalra. She said they also watched the film in 2022 and were satisfied with its depiction of Khalra’s struggle for human rights during a critical period in Punjab’s history.
