The Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab has dismissed from service SHO Navdeep Singh of police division-one here after he was booked in an abetment to suicide case wherein two brothers Manavjit (40) and Jashanbir Dhillon (36) had plunged into Beas river from the Goindwal bridge in Kapurthala district on August 17 following alleged harassment from Jalandhar police.

Along with the SHO, an ASI and a woman constable were also booked in the abetment to suicide case. The dismissal was confirmed by Jalandhar Police Commissioner Kuldeep Chahal. The two brothers were from Jalandhar. Manavjit was allegedly humiliated by SHO Navdeep Singh and other officers at police division-one, Jalandhar.

Manavjit was also kept in custody for a day, something that his younger brother Jashanbir could not tolerate and he (Jashanbir) informed Manavjit of his intention to jump into the Beas. Despite Manavjit’s efforts to stop him, Jashanbir left his turban on the bridge and jumped.

Manavjit, in a bid to save his brother, also jumped into the river. Jashanbir’s body was found from the fields on the riverbank on September 2. The family refrained from cremating his remains until action was taken against the accused police officer. Manavjit Singh is still missing.

Meanwhile, after the dismissal of the SHO on Wednesday, his wife Sukhwinder Kaur spoke to the media wherein she claimed that her husband has been missing for three days. And in this regard, she had already filed a complaint at the police control room, Jalandhar.

“My husband was against drugs and he had apprehended several drug traffickers. He has received best officer awards, including one on August 15 this year. But now he is being portrayed as a criminal through a video recorded during the Covid period. In the video, which has gone viral, he is seen kicking a ‘rehri’ (pushcart). He did so then because he lost his family members to Covid including his brother and despite the government placing restrictions during the pandemic, people were spreading Covid by putting up ‘rehris’,” she said, adding that she will go to court and even meet the CM and DGP to seek justice.

She said that if Manavjit’s preventive arrest was made, it was because he had misbehaved with a woman constable at police division-one and allegedly threatened to strip her uniform.
