A number of students gathered at the Student Centre of Panjab University (PU) to protest against the treatment meted out to Deputy Consul General Devyani Khobragade, who was arrested in the USA last week on alleged visa fraud charges.
Highlighting that Khobragade was not only handcuffed in public but also made to go through strip and cavity searches at a New York police station,a procedure normally used for criminals. The students who had assembled under the banner Lok Awaaz termed the incident as derogatory for the country.
Reports have also claimed that Khobragade was kept in a lock up with common criminals and drug addicts, and all this was done by the US government in the name of following the law of the land, said a student.
Speaking on the occasion,Professor Manjit Singh, convener of Lok Awaaz, appreciated the Indian governments stand of refusing to meet American officials on the pre-scheduled meetings and called upon the government not to entertain any obligation towards the American staff of the consulate at New Delhi till a public apology was received.
Another speaker Inder Singh, from All India Save Education Committee, alleged that the action of the American government spoke of arrogance and racial discrimination. Singh said that the USA government would not have acted in the same way had these charges been levelled against a European diplomat.
