The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is planning to consult senior lawyers following a returnable notice served by the Delhi High Court on the plea seeking de-registration of the party for allegedly “violating the principles of secularism”. The plea wants action against the SAD for its alleged affiliation with religious bodies like the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
Similar notice has been issued to the Election Commission of India after pointing it out over the last 10 to 12 years through innumerable petitions and representations that SAD was violating the fundamental principles of secularism,claims the plea.
The notices,issued a few days ago,are returnable by April 17,came on a plea by chairman of the Malta Boat Tragedy Mission Probe,Balwant Singh Khera,who has alleged that the SAD was actively participating in religious affairs,and thus violating the basis of its registration.
General Secretary,SAD,Prem Singh Chandumajra claimed the party would give a befitting reply to the notice and though the applicant against their party is habitual of this,the party is an old ethical party and has done nothing wrong.
“If there are legal issues,they would be dealt legally by our lawyers. We have nothing to hide on our secularism as we our committed for the betterment of all,” he stated.
Speaking on the issue,spokesman and secretary,SAD,Daljit Singh Cheema claimed the party head-office in Sector 28 in Chandigarh is yet to receive any such notice. “A similar case was filed before the Election Commission by the same applicant a few years ago and the plea was dismissed then,” he said.
