A seminar on Science and Society was organised by Panjab University (PU) on the occasion of the National Education Day on Monday. November 11 has been declared as the National Education Day by Government of India to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad,who was the the first Education Minister of independent India.
Professor Nandita Shukla Singh from Department of Education,who is also the Dean Student Welfare gave a presentation on the life and work of Maulana Azad.
Meanwhile,the students and faculty of PUs Centre of Social Work,UIEASS visited Nishkam – Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas,Kharar,Mohali on the occasion. The students informed the children of the organisation about the life and works of Maulana Azad and the relevance of this day. The visit was followed by sports and singing competition.
A poster making competition was organised by the department of Life Long Learning and Extension in collaboration with University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD) to mark the occasion.
A lecture on Culture,Education and Nation-building with special reference to Maulana Azad was organised in the Department of Evening Studies-Multi Disciplinary Research Centre at the varsity.
Delivering the lecture,Professor Sudhir Kumar highlighted how a multifaceted nationalist,educationalist and a polymath like Maulana Azad contributed to the project of the nation making through his active interventions-both textual and political in Indias freedom struggle and even in the post-independence period.
Another seminar was organised in Dr SSB University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (SSBUICET) on Innovative and Sustainable Engineering.
The seminar was organized under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-II).
Professor Kumar underlined the significance of Maulana Azads strident opposition to Two Nation Theory.
Professor Kumar also highlighted the contribution of Azad to Islamic theology and jurisprudence,as a scholar of the Holy Quran. He also talked about the literary and cultural significance of Azads book on Urdu prose- Ghubar-e-Khatir which showcases Azad as a non-conformist intellectual who also criticized the religious orthodoxy from within.
