The charm of registration numbers in the city seems to be fading, with the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) getting a poor response each time applications for fancy numbers are being sought.
For some time, the number of applications received by the department has been dropping significantly, and for the first time, the department recently had to extend the last date of receiving applications for the upcoming auction of fancy numbers, thus indicating a lack of interest towards the trend.
The lack of interest may be due to the frequent auctions, which are now being held almost every month and a half,or due to the hike in road tax which has now brought the tax amount at par with the neighbouring state of Punjab.
In fact, for the first time in the history of RLA,in the month of January, the auction for the vanity numbers in the series CH 01 AR was even canceled after it got a very poor response.
The auction was held again in the same month and a little more than what was earned during the first time was earned by the department.
On the last day on Wednesday, after the deadline was extended from April 27 to May 1 for receiving the applications for the series CH 01 AT,the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) received a total of 313 applications. Out of these,178 were single applications and thus these numbers would be given on the reserve price while the remaining 135 will participate in the auction and will bid for 47 numbers which will be auctioned.
The date of the auction is yet to be decided and in all its likelihood,it will take place on May 6,said an official.
For the number 0001 in the news series, four applications have been received, for 0002 there are four applications, for 0003 there are five applications, for 0005 there are six applications while for 0009 and 0011 in this series, five applications have been received each and 1313 has received six applications.
In the past, the department was getting 8-9 applications for the first nine single digit numbers besides several other unique numbers such as 0044,1111,9999 etc.
