In what could be construed as adding insult to injury in the matter pertaining to the ill treatment of a pregnant woman,Lakhsmi,at the Government Multi Specialty Hospital,Sector 16 recently, the hospital authorities have been sitting on the inquiry report which was submitted four days back.

The inquiry was conducted by the head of the gynecology department and the report was submitted on Friday itself. However, the hospital authorities have said that the Director Health Services Dr Chander Mohan is yet to see the report and therefore nothing can be said about its exact findings or recommendations. When Chandigarh Newsline contacted Dr Chander Mohan for the report,he said that he was busy in a meeting.

Later attempts to contact him proved futile as he did not answer the calls.

While insiders say that a clean chit has been given to the staff on the matter, all that the department has done is dismiss a nurse who was working on contract with the hospital. Lakshmi had claimed that this nurse did help her when she was in pain and also had wheeled her into the Operation Theatre. Also, she was the one who un-clamped the umbilical cord of the dead baby immediately after the delivery.

New versions of the information about who was present in the labour room and the gynecology ward at the time of the incident is being released every day. While initially the entire blame was put on Gurkirat, the nurse who was eventually dismissed from service,it has now been revealed that the absence of a ward attendant due to which Lakshmi had to walk on her own from the Labour Room OT to her bed in the ward despite the bleeding at about 3 am,is a more serious lapse. However, whether the inquiry report mentions this or not is yet to be known.

It was on July 10 that 24-year-old Lakshmi, who was carrying a dead baby inside her for three days, alleges she was treated callously even after doctors at the hospital found out about her miscarriage. Instead of terminating her pregnancy, she was asked to come the next day to the OPD ward.

Nurse guilty of assaulting student, says inquiry report

After a staff nurse slapped a student who was undergoing training as medical laboratory technician in another incident on June 28 at the hospital, the nurse has been found guilty of the assault. According to the inquiry report submitted, the nurse Sheela, who was off duty that day,not only pushed the student Mehak but also slapped her in full public view when the latter tried to stop her from going inside room number 17 where she was on duty. This entire episode was captured on the CCTV camera installed in the hospital and after verifying the footage, the two member inquiry committee found the staff nurse guilty of the physical assault. Sources in the hospital say that the inquiry committee has recommended repatriation against the nurse for her action.
