Security across Chandigarh was Monday tightened late in the evening after a powerful explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro station that killed at least eight people and injured several others.

Acting swiftly on Central intelligence alerts, the Chandigarh Police placed the city on high alert, intensifying checking and patrolling at key public locations including the railway station, inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs), and crowded market areas.

Senior officials confirmed that the alert was sounded immediately after reports of the Delhi blast emerged. Police Control Room (PCR) teams and local police stations were directed to begin joint patrolling in all high-footfall areas and vital installations. Security personnel at the Chandigarh railway station and ISBT-17 and 43 have been asked to remain on round-the-clock vigil. Luggage screening, identity verification, and random checking of vehicles entering the city have been stepped up to ensure public safety.

Inspector General (IG) of Police, Pushpendra Kumar, said the measures were preventive in nature and aimed at maintaining peace and order in Chandigarh.

“Our teams have been deployed at the railway station, bus stands, and markets to ensure no suspicious element or activity goes unnoticed. The situation is under control, and there is no need for panic,” he said.

Police sources said that teams have been conducting surprise checks at parking lots, malls, and busy markets such as Sector 17 Plaza, Sector 22, and Elante Mall.

Uniformed and plainclothes personnel have been tasked with identifying any unattended baggage or suspicious movement. The PCR units have also been instructed to increase mobility and maintain communication with market associations and shopkeepers for quick reporting of any potential threat, said a police official.
