Panchkula : 2008 figures show a 100% jump in strikes and only 13% recovery rate : Goods worth over Rs 2 crore already robbed this year

When it comes to solving robbery cases, the Panchkula police have an extremely poor record. The figures maintained by the police, pertaining to robbery cases registered in 2008,speak volumes of its shoddy recovery rate, which is barely 13 per cent. And while most of the robberies have taken place during the day time, exposing the poor vigil kept by the police, officers are clueless and groping in the dark.

The spate of robberies has raised several questions on the functioning of the district police. All that the police have done to solve the jewellery heists that took place last month and the bank robbery of last week is to release sketches of the suspects.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Khirwar said:“We are making all efforts to arrest the accused involved in various robbery cases and it is for this that several police teams have been sent to different areas. But till now we have failed to get any breakthrough.”

He added:“Though we managed to obtain certain clues about the turbaned man suspected to have been involved in the Sector-20 gold robbery case,no arrest could be made.”

According to the official figures, there were around 10 major robberies in 2007. The number doubled in 2008,with 20 cases being registered throughout the year. In 2009,there have been already three strikes, with the robbed amount surpassing the Rs 2-crore mark.

The number of thefts and burglaries, too, has increased in Panchkula in the last one year. Ironically,Panchkula’s premier investigation agency,Crime Branch, too has failed to gather any vital inputs on the robberies.

Haryana Director General of Police Ranjiv Dalal said he had pulled up Panchkula SP Sandeep Khirwar, asking him to step up intelligence in the area and improve the detection rate.
