A day after a cab driver was found dead, drivers in Mohali, Zirakpur and Kharar held a strike, demanding arrest of the perpetrators. Police also had to resort to a mild baton charge to disperse the drivers in Mullanpur.
Mullanpur Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Satinder Singh said that the investigation was on in the case and they shall soon arrest the culprits. He added that Dharampal’s body was handed over to the family after the postmortem on Tuesday.
The investigation so far has revealed that the taxi was booked offline. When asked about the booking of the cab, the SHO said that the cab was booked offline, which is making it little difficult to identify the culprits.
The police analysed the CCTV footage of Sector 43, Chandigarh from where the assailants had booked the taxi, and suspect that the perpetrators were more than one and an argument might have broken out between the cab driver and them.
Meanwhile, the taxi drivers held a protest against the ‘murder’ and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. The protestors also demanded that the administration should either give compensation to the family or give government job to one member of the family.
President of Cab Drivers Union Vikram Singh said that the administration had asked three days time from them to carry out the arrests. He said the union has placed two demands before the administration. He also alleged that the police batoncharged them while they were protesting.
Some of the cab drivers who did not operate their cabs in protest of the incident had stopped other drivers who were operating cabs in Mohali, Kharar and Zirakpur. The protests were also held in three towns by the cab drivers.
Meanwhile, the family members of Dharampal said that they have asked the police to arrest the culprits soon. The victim was married and had two sons aged 12 years and nine years. His two other brothers are also taxi drivers.
Dharampal was found dead in his cab near Mullanpur on Monday night.
