After Chandigarh got its first dial-e-rickshaw service on Wednesday, the Eco-cab system, known as Rapid Rickshaw Transit, drew an enthusiastic response from the residents on the first day. The five Eco-cabs,initially launched as a tourist attraction, proved to be exciting for the people coming to vist Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden.

Near the pre-paid police booth opposite Sukhna Lake, stand the green coloured,low-floored Eco-cabs surrounded by different people asking for the ride till the Rock Garden. The passenger sits with the seatbelts tucked in,asks for a newspaper, magazine or a mineral water-bottle paying extra charges and the rickshaw-pilot takes them for a ride charging Rs 20 for two passengers till Rock Garden.

Navdeep Asija, founder of the Fazilka Eco-cabs said,“We have got an unexpected amazing response on day one. One 70-year-old lady called and said,‘Puttar ,I want to take ride on a new rickshaw to visit Elante mall from Sector 8’. We had no rickshaw-pilot registered in that sector,so I sent another rickshaw to her place. The pleasant weather also added to people’s excitement, especially children, who were seen excitedly sitting at the back of the rickshaws on special children’s seats.”

“People came from different sectors to take a ride in the Eco-cabs and the rickshaw-pilots took some of them to their homes as people wanted to show the rickshaw to their friends and other people. Though we had this facilty only from Lake to Rock Garden,we sent the rickshaw to other sectors as well on requests,” added Asija.

One of the rickshaw-pilots based in Sector 5,Shiv Mandal, who received the new rickshaw Tuesday, said,“Around 5-6 people have come for the ride till afternoon and everyone praises the rickshaw. The moment people sit, they want to listen to songs, and when I switch on the radio, some want to listen to Punjabi songs and some Hindi. Children hurry up to the back seat and switches on the radio themselves.”

“Everyone who is coming to vist the Lake, asks us about the rickshaw charges and the facilities they will get with a ride,” added another rickshaw-pilot,Gian Singh.

Now,every rickshaw-pilot in the city is a part of the dial-a-rickshaw service, where any one of us can call on the respective numbers provided on the web portal. There are around 169 cycle-rickshaw parking stands in the city, therefore sector-wise cycle stands and the phone numbers of the rickshaw pullers available is mentioned in the data.

Residents can find the contact numbers of their sector based rickshaw-pilots by simply going on the web portal for Chandigarh Eco-cab operations, or by logging on to the android-based App by the name of ‘Chandigarh Eco-cabs’. The website will give them the contact numbers of the rickshaw-pilots along with their names and photographs. Any resident can also refer their favourite rickshaw wala of his/her sector via phone or website to central database. After a verification call, the rickshaw pilot name will be available on the general search.

The facilities have already been started in the sectors including Sector 9,11,15,16,17,19,21,22,23,40,41,42,43,44,45,46,47 and also Sector 56. “A few more cycle-rickshaw parking stands are needed in the developed sectors of 48-51,locations are planned in order to act as a feeder service to the bus-transit and to fulfill the need of intra-sector mobility,” said Asija.

Asija and his team of 12 members are planning to come up with 20 more rickshaws next month.
