40-year-old died after his rehri was hit near Rajindra Park on Friday

A 40-year-old daily wager,Raj Ram,died after his rehri (hand cart) was hit by a car near Rajindra Park in Sector 2 on Friday evening. While police officials said a PCR vehicle reached the spot two minutes after the call was received,the complainant alleged delay in police action.

The accident took place at 7 pm and was reported by Nayagaon resident Aman Bahl. He claimed the victim was breathing when he called for help.

Talking to Newsline,Aman said,“I was on my way home,when I saw 20-30 people standing on the road. I stopped my car and saw a man lying in a pool of blood. There was a rehri nearby with steel poles on it which was damaged. When I asked the people around,they said a car came from behind,hit him and fled.”

Aman added,“I called 100 and was directed to the Punjab police control room. When I asked them for help,the officials there said jurisdiction of that area fell under Chandigarh Police. I then called the Chandigarh Police and got the same response saying that the area came under Punjab police’s jurisdiction”.

After Aman told the UT police that the victim was critically injured,they PCR sent two teams who took the victim to PGIMER. However,the victim was declared dead on arrival.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP),Communications,Roshan Lal said,“As per the PCR records,we received a call at 7.07 pm about the accident. Between three to four minutes,two PCR vehicles reached the spot. The PCR was informed at 7.18 pm that the victim was declared dead by the doctors”.

According to officials investigating the case,the deceased was going towards Nayagaon when a two wheeler hit him. The police also claimed that the deceased was on a bicycle.

When asked if the police called anyone for investigation,officials said that all eyewitnesses were laborers who claimed they did not see anything. When the complainant was asked if he was contacted by the police for questioning,he said,“I missed some calls by the police in the morning. Now that I call back,no one answers”.

The deceased was a resident of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. His family has been contacted to claim the body. A similar incident took place a few days ago when a teenager was hit by a car. While the victim,Jyoti,slipped into coma,the accused driver is yet to be arrested.

The SHO at the Sector 3 police station said,“We have been contacting the car agencies in the city but are yet to find the accused”.
