Scamsters target retired IAS officer, dupe him of Rs 76 Lakh
Harjinder Singh Chahal, a retired IAS officer, had lodged a complaint with Amritsar Commissioner of Police on September 6 stating that he received a call on September 3 and September 4 from purported Mumbai Cyber Crime.

Cyber scamsters have targeted a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and duped him of Rs 76 lakh by ‘digitally arresting’ him. The State Cyber Crime Cell has registered a case. The culprits are not identified yet.
The culprits had called the complainant by posing as officials of Mumbai Crime Branch and then asked him to deposit money in some bank accounts.

The complainant, Harjinder Singh Chahal, a retired IAS officer, had lodged a complaint with Amritsar Commissioner of Police on September 6 stating that he received a call on September 3 and September 4 from purported Mumbai Cyber Crime.
The complainant stated that the caller told him that he was conniving with a criminal who is indulging in money laundering.
“He told me that a subpoena had been issued on my name by the Bombay High court. He promised to help me clear from the case if I did everything the way they would instruct me. I was so hypnotised by the caller that I started following his instructions. He gave me addresses of different banks and asked me to deposit different amounts in the said banks to help him verify my accounts in the banks and clear me of the charges after verification of my cash in the banks,” the complainant alleged.

He stated that he deposited different amounts lying in his three bank accounts one by one as instructed by the caller. The total amount of fraud had come to Rs 76 lakh.
The complainant stated, “I have thus fallen victim of a fraud. A complaint has already been registered in the Cyber Crime Branch of your office. Now I implore you to kindly help me retrieve my hard-earned money by taking personal interest in the case so as to save me from this predicament.”
The complaint urged registration of an FIR. Acting on the complaint, the State Cyber Cell in Phase IV registered an FIR under sections 308(2) (extortion), 318(4) (cheating), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and sections 66-C and 66-D of the Information Technology (IT) Act against unknown users/operators of alleged bank accounts, WhatsApp account number and mobile numbers.
