If the number of incidents reported and cases registered in the Panchkula is any indication, the crime rate in the district has decreased in comparison to last year. Data provided by the police indicates that Panchkula had witnessed major robberies including the ones that took place at PC Jewellers and at banks in Sector 15 and 20 last year, but no such incident has been reported this year till now.
While 12 cases of robberies were reported till May 2009,this year, only two have been reported. There has also been a fall in the number of rape cases. The last year saw 11 cases,as compared to this years seven.
While the cops attributed the decline to strong policing, residents claimed credit for being more vigilant. I feel no department can succeed without the peoples participation. Almost 80 per cent of residents have put up security gates in their respective Sectors, employed private guards, put up electronic alarm systems, close circuit television cameras and so on, said SK Nayar, president of the Citizens Welfare Association,Panchkula. He said,It is the alertness of residents that has helped in bringing down the crime rate.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Shilpa Deswal,a resident of Sector 14,as she said,Residents of our Sector have employed four security guards at night instead of two. We have an alarm system in almost every house, apart from a pet dog.
Talking to Newsline,Superintendent of Police (SP),Panchkula ,Maneesh Chaudhary said,Ever since we started rewarding the genuine functionaries and taking punitive action against those who shirk responsibilities,we have been able to curb the crime rate.
