In a setback for the Chandigarh Police,a local court on Monday acquitted an accused in the murder case of his father. The order was given by Additional District and Sessions Judge S S Sahani as all the four witnesses in the case, including three family members, had turned hostile.

The case dates back to October 2011,when 32-year-old Ajay Kumar allegedly killed his father Chinta Ram over a property dispute at their residence at Palsora village in Sector 56. Ajay was arrested within hours of the incident.

Ajay was accused of strangulating his 65-year-old father after a dispute over the sale of their house. The prosecution has claimed that Ajay had pressured his father to sell his house to fulfil his (Ajay) own monetary needs for a long time, but Chinta Ram had refused to do so.

After killing his father,Ajay allegedly threatened his mother Gomti Devi before fleeing,Gomti had reportedly told the police. She had earlier deposed before the police that there was a dispute in the family and that she was threatened by her son (Ajay) after he had strangulated his father. However, last month,Gomti had turned hostile, saying she had never given such a statement to the police.

Last week,Ajay’s brothers,Om Prakash and Dinesh, had retracted their statements given to the police. They had earlier deposed before the Chandigarh Police that their mother had told them their father had been killed by their brother. Later, they claimed they were living separately and when they reached the house, all the things were scattered and resembled a robbery scene.

The fourth material witness in the case,Jinder Kaur,a neighbour of the victim, had also retracted her statement. She had deposed before the police that she had informed the police about the incident. However,in the court she had submitted that she was not the only one and that there were other neighbours who had come to Gomti’s house after hearing her cries.
