Couple dies by suicide after Rs 36 lakh overseas job fraud, say police
The note alleges that the agent took Rs 18 lakh each from Gagandeep and Hakam, totalling Rs 36 lakh, but neither sent them abroad nor returned the money. The couple was allegedly under mental stress after failing to recover the amount.

Distressed reportedly over a Rs 36 lakh fraud, a couple died after allegedly consuming a toxic chemical compound at a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Zirakpur on Friday.
According to police, Gagandeep Kaur died at the spot, while her husband, Hakam Singh, was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed during treatment.
Gagandeep, a resident of Sekhan in Takke Ke Patti village of Barnala, and Hakam, a resident of Mehmadpur in Barnala, had been living at a PG accommodation in Zirakpur for some time after their marriage.
Police said a purported seven-page suicide note recovered from the spot contains allegations against an agent who had allegedly taken money from the couple on the promise of sending them abroad. According to the note, the agent was Hakam’s schoolmate, and the couple trusted him because of their old acquaintance.
The note alleges that the agent took Rs 18 lakh each from Gagandeep and Hakam, totalling Rs 36 lakh, but neither sent them abroad nor returned the money. The couple was allegedly under mental stress after failing to recover the amount.
Zirakpur SHO Jasvir Singh Toor said a seven-page suicide note had been recovered from the spot. “The forensic and handwriting examination of the note is being carried out,” he said.
Toor said the families of the deceased had been informed and police action had been initiated based on their statements. Police are examining the allegations made in the note, the alleged Rs 36 lakh transaction, and the role of the agent.

“The next legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. Efforts are being made to arrest the accused at the earliest,” the SHO said.
