The police on Friday morning rescued a woman from her in-laws’ residence at Chandigarh Rural Basti in Kapurthala district’s Sultanpur Lodhi, where she was allegedly tied up in her bedroom by her mother-in-law and her brother.

The police found Kuldip Kaur,in her early 30s,with her hands and feet tied in ropes. After rescuing her, they arrested Preetam Kaur and her brother Santokh Singh for allegedly trying to kill Kuldip, who had married Paramjit Singh in 2002. The couple also have a son.

Kuldip’s brother Gurnam Singh claimed that Paramjit stays with another woman. As Kuldip objected to this, her in-laws ill-treated her. “I was trying to contact her on her phone since last night, but to no avail. I got suspicious and contacted some villagers, who informed the sarpanch,” he added.

When Sarpanch Rani Naiyyar sent some people to look for Kuldip at her in-laws’ place, they found the house locked from outside. However, they could hear screams from inside and thus, informed the police.

According to police,in 2007,Paramjit had made Kuldip sign divorce papers on the pretext that he had to abroad and for that purpose,it was essential that he marries an NRI. “My sister was innocent and never imagined that her husband was cheating her just to marry his lover,” said Gurnam. The divorce is still pending,he added.
