With the Indian Coffee House (ICH),next to the Sector-17 Plaza Fountain, set to shut down this coming week, regular customers, filled with nostalgia, are making the most of the last few days. Discussions had been going on for some time over the rent between the management of the ICH and the owners of the SCOs. The final decision had been taken in January this year owing to which the ICH had to settle for a 4-storey building in Kusumpati,Shimla.
The cafe has been situated in Sector-17 since 1971 and there are customers who have been visiting the place since then. I have been coming here daily for the last 30 years. I am very saddened by the fact that I wont be able to do the same from next week. The ultimate loser of this decision would be daily visitors like me who have an emotional attachment with the place and the people working here. said Darshan Singh,a retired Income Tax Officer.
We are addicted to this place. We have been coming here together every day for around 30 years. It will be difficult for us to find a new hangout. added Gurmeet Singh a local shopkeeper. The staff also has to face a lot of problems as they will have to relocate to another place. Our only alternative to this place is the Indian Coffee House near the empire stores but after the closing that one will be very crowded. explained Anil Duggal ,another daily visitor of the coffee house.
The Manager of the other ICH near Empire Stores,Ramesh Dutt said that although there is set to be an increase in the number people coming there from next week, they were ready to handle it. He also said that they have hired more staff for the purpose. We will try our best to serve everyone well in the Coffee house, he added.
