Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday alleged that a close relative of a Punjab Cabinet minister was involved in illegal mining. Bajwa made the allegation on the floor of the House during Zero Hour while claiming a shortfall in revenue from sand mining as compared to the projections made by the Aam Aadmj Party (AAP) before coming to power.

Pointing to a statement by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains recently regarding three FIRs registered in Rupnagar against illegal mining, Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition, demanded to know details of the company that had been acted against.

“I want to ask details of the company, New Satluj Stone Crushers, against which a case has been registered. The information that I have received is that this crusher is being run by a close relative of a senior minister of your government. That company does not even have an electricity connection and is working on generators. There is a loot taking place. Who is this minister whose relative is running this mining,” asked Bajwa before he was interrupted by Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and his mic was switched off.

Earlier, Bajwa cornered the government on its guarantee on sand mining revenue. “Your national convenor (Arvind Kejriwal) had made it. It had been promised that every year Rs 20,000 crore will be generated through mining in the three rivers of Punjab. The state should have earned Rs 60,000 crore in these three years. Instead, less than Rs 900 crore have been earned. Where is the remaining Rs 59,000 crore,” he asked.

The LoP said illegal mining is taking place all across Punjab and even the high court has sounded warning about it. “I would ask the government if they have any policy to stop this illegal mining,” he said while pointing to illegal mining taking place in an area close to Zirakpur on outskirts of Chandigarh.

RSS mindset being imposed through NEP: Pargat Singh

Congress MLA Pargat Singh raised the issue of National Education Policy (NEP) and said that the RSS mindset was being implemented on students through this policy. He said that six states have rejected the policy through resolutions in their respective Assemblies and that Punjab should also follow suit.

Pargat Singh also termed the Ravi Beas Tribunal as “illegal” saying Rajasthan and Haryana have been included in it despite not being riparian states. “This is a very serious matter and
we must raise it otherwise we will not have any legal defence later,” he said.
