Accusing the Punjab government of corruption in the power sector, senior Congress leader and MLA Sunil Jakhar said that if his party is voted to power, it would get such ‘scams’ probed by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Jakhar was in Jalandhar on Friday and said that these plants are owned by the Ambanis and Adanis and Congress will investigate them thoroughly.
Jakhar informed that in the financial year 2015-16 power purchased from Talwandi Sabo plant was at Rs 6.66 per unit and from Rajpura it was Rs 4.05 per unit. Similarly, for the year 2016-17 the rate to purchase power from Talwandi Sabo was Rs 7.50 per unit and from Rajpura Power Plant was agreed at Rs 4.25 per unit and even though both plants were penalised Rs 950 crore for not making the plants operational by 2013 as per the MoU but government never charged this penalty, he added.
Jakhar said that even these rates are higher than that fixed in Power Purchase Agreement at the time of MoU. “Rs 1000 crore was given to these private power plants for not purchasing the power last year. And this year Rs 2300 crore would be paid to these plants including Rs 1700 crore to Talwandi Sabo,” he said.
Jakhar revealed that in a question’s reply by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the Assembly, it was informed in writing that Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) purchase power at the average rate of Rs 3.38 per unit from National Grid.
