Mayor Poonam Sharma and all Congress councillors were absent at a function of Deputy Mayor Gurbax Rawat in Sector 39 Saturday.
The function was organised for the inauguration of a park in the deputy mayor’s ward. Finance Secretary Sarvjit Singh was the chief guest at the event.
Interestingly, only one councillor from BJP, Arun Sood, who is the front-runner for the mayor’s post, was present on the occasion. Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, he said, “We are for the development of the city. When it comes to developmental work, it doesn’t matter as to which party we belong to.”
Two days ago, the absence of the name of the mayor from the invite of Saturday’s function and she not knowing about the chief guest had sparked a controversy between the two Congress leaders. The mayor said that she wouldn’t be able to attend the function as she had to attend a conference in Amritsar, which, interestingly, is to be held on Sunday.
When asked about the mayor’s absence at the event, Rawat said, “The mayor could not come as she is not in the city.”
Sources, however, said that while inviting the finance secretary to the event, there was a breach of protocol as the mayor was simply “by-passed”. On reacting to this move, the mayor said that she did want to get into petty politics.
