After facing attacks from the Opposition for not acting against Amritpal Singh, Punjab government on Saturday found support from the Opposition Congress as the police launched a massive crackdown to arrest the Waris Punjab De chief and members of his outfit. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has, however maintained silence.

Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa termed the police action as “rather late but welcome step.” He called upon people of Punjab to maintain peace and not to believe in the rumours.

State Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring trained his guns at Amritpal and said that true Sikhs do not flee.

“Even though the Punjab Police has been forced to take this action, but it is finally taking action,” he tweeted.

Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu took a dig at the preacher for fleeing from police. “The person, who wanted mothers’ sons to get killed, is running away like a coward. This man was provoking the youth to take to arms and sacrifice themselves for Khalistan. Now, look at him. He is running away to save his life,” said Bittu in a video message.

Incidentally, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa maintained silence on the issue.

BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal also hailed police action. He said that Amritpal was an enemy of the country and strict action should be taken against him.
