Shiromani Akali Dal on Thursday described the state Congress’ statement on shortage of gunny bags as contrary to what Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had said on the floor of the House in reply to a question of the SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

SAD secretary and spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said that on Wednesday, while admitting that there was a shortage of gunny bags,Mukherjee has told the Parliament that two lakh gunny bags are being produced daily in West Bengal and since last week, this capacity has been enhanced with additional production of 25,000 bags daily.

Cheema added that the minister has even expressed his helplessness by categorically stating that even import of gunny bags was not possible at this stage and hence, the crisis. “When Harsimrat Badal raised this issue on the floor of the House, instead of supporting her,Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa preferred to oppose her to gain cheap publicity. The Congress leadership, instead of raising false and misleading issues against the SAD-BJP government, should start work for the betterment and welfare of the people of the state,” he said.
