The Congress today urged the people to oust the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine in the state and give the Congress-led UPA regime another chance at the Centre. Chairman of the campaign committee of Punjab Congress Capt Amarinder Singh announced that the party would decide the candidates for the Lok Sabha polls soon after the coming Parliament session. Congress Legislative Party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, however, added that the partys election committee would decide the candidates and not an individual.
Amarinder added that senior party members would meet the Election Commission on February 9 to get Punjab declared a sensitive state and deploy Central forces during the polls. He apprehended that the Akalis would indulge in violence and use force during the polls.
The Congress managed to put up a somewhat-united face yet again as almost all major state leaders attended the mass contact programme, which started from Sangrur.
The former CM accused the Badals of promoting dynastic rule in the state. No place is given to Akali leaders who have worked hard, which is causing resentment within SAD, he claimed. He called upon disgruntled Akalis to join the Congress.
He said the state government has no plans to tackle the economic slowdown.
CLP leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal cautioned the bureaucracy for playing into the hands of Akalis and said,We are making a list of such babus and would not spare them during our regime if they continued with their activities.
State Congress president Mohinder Singh Kaypee alleged that funds received under various Central schemes are being diverted for sangat darshan programmes.
Former PPCC chief Shamsher Singh Dullo, former ministers Tej Parkash Singh,Jasjit Singh Randhawa and Surinder Singla and MLAs.
Dullo airs discontent,spoils party
Fatehgarh sahib: The Congress was trying its best to put up a united face at the rally, before former state Congress chief Shamsher Singh Dullo decided this was his chance to create a flutter. In his address,Dullo said,We would not have lost power in the state had the party remained united during the last Assembly polls. I did not indulge in chamchagiri and this annoyed many leaders, he went on. Dullos sudden attack charged up the atmosphere and Amarinders supporters started raising slogans,to which Dullos supporters reciprocated. The situation was controlled by Sangrur leader Jasbir Singh. Dullo, however, thanked the historic land of Fatehgarh Sahib for bringing the Punjab Congress together. It may be noted that Dullo is a strong contender for the party ticket from the newly-created Fatehgarh Sahib (Reserve) Parliamentary constituency. When asked about the differences within the party, quite evident on stage today, both Amarinder and CLP leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal denied any such thing.
