The busy market in Phase IX,Mohali, was witness to a high drama on Monday night when a group of five people allegedly abducted a youth and sped away in a car. The police said 20-year-old Gurdeep Singh of Sunny Enclave,Kharar, was freed after almost 12 hours of wrongful confinement.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Harbans Singh, the investigating officer, said after mercilessly beating him up and threatening him with dire consequences, the abductors dropped Gurdeep near Phase VI around 8 am on Tuesday.

On the statements of Gurdeep and his friend Atinder Pal Singh, who was a witness to the abduction, the police have arrested Jagdeep Singh alias Lucky,a former Bharatiya Janata Party leader who joined the Congress on Sunday, and Amarjeet Singh of Sector 41-D,Chandigarh. According to his statement to the police,Lucky was a

formerly a senior vice-president of the BJP’s district youth wing.

Though the exact motive behind the abduction was not confirmed, preliminary investigations linked it to an “attack” on Lucky’s house in Phase IX the same night. According to a complaint lodged by Lucky’s mother, armed men barged into their house on Monday night and threatened them with dire consequences if Lucky did not return to the BJP. He was reportedly not at home when this had happened.

“It seems Lucky thought Gurdeep was part of the group,” the IO said, adding that they were yet to interrogate the two arrested persons and record the statement of Gurdeep.

The police have registered a case under Sections 365,148 and 149 of the IPC in this connection.

The BJP,meanwhile,issued a statement,disassociating itself with Lucky.
