After the Centre announced a cut in fuel prices on Wednesday, pressure is mounting on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state to reduce bus fares.
Earlier this year, after fuel prices had increased, the state had hiked bus fares by 25 per cent.
Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee has stepped up its demand for immediate reduction in bus fares.
Talking to mediapersons in Shimla today,Congress spokesperson Kuldeep Rathour said,“The reasons given by the state government for hiking bus fares were increase in fuel prices. Now even when the Centre has reduced fuel price twice in the past 40 days, the state government is not reducing the fares. This way,the common man is not able to fully benefit from the Centre’s decision.”
In February 2008,the fare in hilly areas was increases from 74 paise per kilometer to 92.50 paise per kilometer. The fare in the plains was increased from 42.50 paise per kilometer to 59.40 paise per kilometer.
