Haryana govt informs mediapersons but not school authorities

The announcement to extend the summer vacations by the Haryana government caused major chaos and harassment to primary school students and their parents on Monday. The state government informed mediapersons about the extended vacations but it did not inform the schools. While the parents had already come to the school to drop their children, the school authorities remained clueless till 10 am as to whether to open the schools or not.

“I called the school after my father read the newspaper in the morning. I was already about to leave for school. The receptionist said that we should do what the newspapers have reported. They had no information about it,” said Mehul Jha,a student of class V.

Haryana Director of Elementary Education Abhe Singh Yadav contended,“Giving information through the media is the best way. It is very difficult to inform each and every school at such short notice.”

Principals of various schools across the city tried to minimise the students’ problem after confirming with the District Education Officer (DEO) themselves. However, they were not intimated about the extended vacation till after 10 am on Monday via e-mail. This did not prove of much help as most schools start between 7 am and 8 am.

Satluj School Principal Krit Serai said that in situations like this, there is always confusion on the first day. Motiram School Principal Uma Kapadia said,“We were not informed of any holiday. We only came to know when the confusion started in the morning and we read the newspaper”.

Chamanlal DAV School Principal Anjali Maria said that she heard the local news and confirmed from the DEO’s office. Sources at the DEO office, however, said that they too were not aware of the development till late in the morning.

Parents, nevertheless, faced trouble as they were unclear about the decision till it was already time for the children to leave for school. Many students came to know only after they reached school. Students using private transport were affected most as some schools had informed their bus and other transport services and put up notices at their gates. Other private schools sent bulk text messages to parents in the morning.

In Chandigarh and Mohali, however, news of the holiday extension spread without any trouble. The UT Administration had sent across text messages and emails to all schools, along with media persons,on Sunday evening, informing them about the decision to extend primary school vacations.

The normal procedure

Any government decision on such matters is issued for public notice by the Directorate of School Education,Haryana. According to the system, the Directorate should inform the district information offices (DEO),which will inform the block education offices (BEO),which will,in turn, intimate the cluster in-charges who are supposed to informs the group of schools under their supervision.
