Centre versus Punjab,Haryana
Less than a contest between two lawyers vying for the coveted post of president of the Bar,it was a battle between the central government and Punjab,Haryana. For,while one was represented and more importantly supported by the central government, the other was supported by offices of both Advocate Generals of Punjab and Haryana. They say if you have the candid support of both the Advocate Generals it becomes devilishly difficult to defeat the blessed one. To add to Harpreet Singh Brars credit was his proximity with senior leaders of the Akali regime. However,Dr Anmol Rattan Sidhu, assistant Solicitor General of India had a smooth run as he crushed his opponent,Harpreet Singh Brar by over 800 votes.
Now is it a coincidence,or a favourite spot for the Chandigarh Police,to show that all those involved in nefarious and anti social activities are arrested from Jiri Mandi (a secluded area near Sector 39). When asked to respond to this question,by media persons at a press conference,Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naunihal Singh found himself in a rather uncomfortable situation. The odd response was Police is working on a strategy to trap the accused. And when confronted with the question about why, despite so many arrests from the area, the Police has failed to curb an alleged illegal trade of construction raw materials from the same place, the SSP said we will act only if we receive a complaint from someone.
Everyone with a phone has been at one time or the other been bothered by pesky callers selling everything from insurance to houses. With calls received at all odd hours,it is difficult to escape. Mayor Subhash Chawla has also been at the receiving end of these calls. Perturbed at being disturbed in the middle of meetings, the Mayor is known to have been harassed enough to tell the callers that they should add to their lists that this is the number of the citys Mayor and stop bothering him with calls.

The Doon MLA from Himachal,Ram Kumar Chaudhary, who was brought to the court on Wednesday for taking his handwriting samples was wearing a new look. Clean shaven,he was donning a Himachali cap and was wearing white clothes. There was a smirk on his face as police took some 60 specimens of his handwriting in the court as some of the handwriting samples did not make any sense. He was made to write some names many times and even asked to write such lines as there are two fathers. Chaudhary had been sporting a beard when he was brought to the court on earlier occasions and police had also alleged that in order to hide himself he was also wearing a turban so that he could not be identified before he surrendered.
Since the day Prof Arun K Grover joined the Panjab University as Vice-Chancellor,he has been talking about the first graduate of the varsity Prof Ruchi Ram Sahni. He mentioned him in the first Senate he chaired, then twice in two separate press conferences. Considering this, one of the varsity professors proposed that V-C must include at least one question on Prof Sahni in the PU OCET examination.
The Buzz Is…
HC Gera,an epidemiologist, has chosen to pen a book of poems and rhymes on the menace of mosquitoes based on scientific and operational research. Titled Sting in the Buzz,Gera creates short and snappy rhymes, which children may hum every time they see the bi-winged creature. The funny illustrations highlight the urgent need to curb mosquito-borne diseases and also the various ways by which we are affected by them. Gera says that his 33 years in National Vector Borne Disease Control Program gave him the scientific insight to understand and observe the behaviour of the mosquito!
That the UT police officials are art lovers was not well known until recently when the top brass of the UT Police made a beeline for an all-women art exhibition at the Government Museum and Art Gallery,Sector 10. It so happened that the one of the exhibitors happened to be a top cops wife,so everyone else had to dutifully go and admire the art. Not only this, even the wives of other officials who work in other departments including Income Tax also made it a point to not only visit the exhibition but also leak the news of the visit to the media for publishing. Now thats what you call true art appreciation.
