Shielding its own

Left red-faced with its Superintendent of Police’s (SP) arrest by the CBI on charges of bribe, the Chandigarh Police ensured that Desh Raj does not have to face embarrassing questions from the media by not allowing media persons to attend the cultural function inside Burail Jail. In the past, the police officials used to call up media persons to ensure proper coverage. However, this time it was quite the opposite.

Despite repeated requests from media persons, the police refused to let the media persons in. “We will send a detailed press note about the event,” said a senior police officer to them. Sources say that the police did not want its SP,who would have had to face a volley of uncomfortable questions from journalists,to be embarrassed any further.

The art of forgetfulness

The Russian Divine Light Cultural Group of Brahma Kumaris, who are currently in the city to present a cultural festival, stated that Indians are forgetting their cultural values while they are hailing the outside world.

“Everywhere in the world,Indian values are upheld but here people are blindly copying the West. We are performing Indian arts and are hopeful that we will succeed in attracting their attention back to it,” said a Russian artiste.

Short cut to victory

On the day of Dussehra, the costumes of various Ramlila artistes were seen spread out on the ground as a result of the downpour the previous night. The artistes say that some of them were in the middle of performing crucial scenes and could not have left the stage in the middle.

“Ram was going to defeat Kumbhkaran when it started raining. Even thought the audience scattered, instead of leaving the stage abruptly, the artistes improvised and cut short the battle to wrap up quickly,” an artiste from Sector 24 said.

Wolf story

The infamous booth allotment scam in the UT administration refuses to die down with rumours abuzz about the cancellation of booths almost every week.

Recently,on the day of a holiday,a team from the Estate Office went to Krishna Market, where the booths of the allotment scam are located,to check encroachments there. Immediately there were rumours that the team has come to cancel the allotments and within minutes, over two dozen mediapersons, armed with cameras, reached the market only to find that it was merely a routine drive.

The councillors, during discussions in the meeting of the General House of the Municipal Corporation, tend to all speak at once, making attempts to get themselves heard above the other. After a similar scene was witnessed this time, attempts were made to get the mics of the councillors switched off,a practice followed in the assemblies. However,it was soon realized that such a facility is not available in the House. And the din carried on unabated.

Sought After

With the Chandigarh boxing team leaving for Hyderabad to take part in the nationals,a lot of youngsters in the team seemed excited about the event,as they wanted to meet India’s ace boxer Vijender Singh on the opening day.

Some of the young boxers from the team even packed their old gloves in order to get Vijender’s autograph. The Haryana boxer might have failed to fetch any medal in the London Olympics, but he sure has a tremendous fan following.

Star Power

With the Ranji Trophy slated to be underway from next week, the preparations of the Punjab team for the event are on at full swing at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

With off-spinner Harbhajan Singh leading from the front, the Punjab team will have the presence of players like Mandeep Singh,Rahul Sharma and later on,Yuvraj Singh.

However,Yuvraj Singh might skip the Ranji opener against VVS Laxman-led Hyderabad as he has been selected in the India A team for the practice game against England. With teams like Mumbai and Bengal travelling to Mohali for Ranji matches, star players like Sourav Ganguly,Ajinkya Rahane,Ambati Rayyudu,Ashok Dinda are expected to be seen in action in the next two months. It seems for local cricket fans, the next two months will be full of thrill.

Winning matches,and hearts

Earlier this week, during the final of Administrator’s Challenge Cup All India football tournament, newbie Dalbir Academy of Patiala did well to hold the rampaging Chandigarh Football Academy till the dying minutes of the match. Until the final match, the Chandigarh team had notched up 58 goals in four matches. While the Patiala team must have fancied its chances of lifting the cup,its dreams were shortlived as Daniel, top scorer with 18 goals, pumped in the solitary goal- his 19th goal of the campaign.

The players were left in tears as they felt they had let the match slip out of their hands. But like true champions,Daniel and Company applauded the Patiala players for their brave performance. The Patiala team lost the match but won many hearts with their grit and hard work.

Down Memory lane

Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Partap Rudy,on a recent visit to Chandigarh last week, reminisced about his student days in the city. Rudy was a student of Government College,Sector 11 and later,he had also been a student of Panjab University.

Rudy recalled how he had been the campaign organizer for former Union Minister Harmohan Dhawan. He used to cycle from the varsity to newspaper offices and deliver press notes, and then wait eagerly for these to appear. “A single small item in the paper used to make my day,” says Rudy.
