CLTA trainees cruise into finals

Playing at home court proved to be a blessing in disguise for Vanshika Sawhney,Ishaque Eqbal and Fatehdeep Singh. Their familiarity with the court coupled with support of the staffers behind them,helped them enter the finals in their respective categories of the All India Tennis Association Championship at the CLTA on Thursday.

Vanshika,a trainee of CLTA and student of Carmel Convent School ,had to make a monumental effort before eking a hard-fought win over Zeel Desai of Gujarat in the girls’ Under-12 singles category. After Vanshika took the first set at 6-3,Zeel played some attacking game in the second set and took 4-1 lead and then 5-2. But Vanshika made a stunning comeback and tied the game at 5-all but still ended on a losing note as Zeel won7-5. In the deciding set,Vanshika used her attacking game to good effect and shut the door on her opponent to win the match at 6-1.

Meanwhile,Ishaque Eqbal,ousted Dhruv Arya 6-3,6-0 in the boys’ Under-12 singles category. Ishaque will next play Shrey Gupta of Haryana who defeated Faizel Qumar of Rajasthan.

Another CLTA trainee,Fatehdeep Singh defeated his compatriot Kamal Kishor Maderna 6-3,6-4 in the boys’ Under-16 category.

Victoria Chahal cruised into the final of the girls’ Under-16 category after she defeated Hassan Abdal Dhanoa of Punjab 0-6,7-5,6-1. She will play against Riya Bhatia (DLI) who beat Vanshika Sawhney (CHD) 6-3,6-4.

The Haryana pair of Medha Toor and Himani Mor claimed the girls under-16 doubles title after beating Karman Kaur ( Delhi ) and Victoria Chahal (Haryana) 4-1,4-0 in the final. Similarly,the boys’ under-16 doubles title was lifted by Atul Sri Patel ( Chandigarh ) and Dhruv Aggarwal (UP) who defeated Anand ( Delhi ) and Shailender Boniface ( Delhi ) 1-4,4-1,10-5 in the final.

The Chandigarh boys doubles team of Sumit Pal Singh and Nihit Rawal defeated Param Pun (Chandigarh) and Shrey Gupta (Haryana) 5-4 (4),3-5,10-8 in the boys’ Under-12 doubles final.
