Though the date for Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections is yet to be decided, the screening committees of political parties are in overdrive. The Congress is once again facing a problem of plenty when it comes to a list of applicants. A total of 500 candidates have applied for 75 wards. Lal Singh,Congress MLA and chairman of the screening committee was in the city to chair a meeting,The response is overwhelming.
District Congress President Pawan Dewan said that Thursday was the last date for submitting applications. The maximum applications have come from ward 37 and women candidates have applied in large numbers. However majority are the relatives of councillors,MLAs or other leaders. In the wards reserved for women, the Congress councillors have fielded their wives thus giving no chance to any other active women candidate. A similar situation is seen with the BJP and SAD candidates as well, Dewan said.
The screening committee members will be seeking recommendations from MLAs on May 15 after which a list will be sent to the PPCC,who will be the final authority to announce the names.
