The Municipal Corporation might have been annually constituting sub-committees for various departments, but for the first time it was realised that apart from three sub-committees the others were not part of the Municipal Act. Approval has now been sought from the UT Administration for constitution of sub-committees.
The three sub-committees that are mentioned in the Municipal Act include water supply, sanitation and house tax committee. The election for the chairperson and vice-chairperson for the three sub-committees will be held in the coming week. For the remaining approval has been sought.
The MC has several sub-committees that hold discussions and take decisions about various departments including fire and emergency services, enforcement, electricity, water and slum development among other things. The BJP had raised the issue of constitution of the sub-committees in the General House of the MC stating that the Mayor does not have the power to constitute the committees. However,a resolution was passed to authorise the Mayor to form panels. This has been the tradition for the past few years.
