Placing the city on a wider domain in art and culture,the first Chandigarh Arts and Heritage Festival started on a musical note with a recital by renowned singer Shubha Mudgal at Tagore Theatre her on Friday. Earlier scheduled to be held at the Open Hand Monument,the venue for the programme was changed due to the downpour that lashed the city. The six-day festival was inaugurated by Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice T S Thakur.
Mudgal,who recited the poetry of Indian saints,was accompanied by eminent tabla player Dr Aneesh Pradhan and vocalist Sudhir Naik.
The art and culture fraternity of the city was present in full attendance,happy with the endeavour taken to promote the heritage.
“It will definitely give an impetus to the culture scene here. It is essential to hold such festivals so that people are able to taste the fine nuances of art and culture,” said Neelam Mansingh,Chairperson of the Department of Indian Theatre,Panjab University.
Nodal officer,Le Corbusier,V N Singh,said that the festival was a good step towards preserving the modern-culture heritage if the city.
Home Secretary Ram Niwas said the administration intends to hold the last event of the festival,flute recital by Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia,at the Open Hand Monument. “The monument is the symbol of the openness of the city. Holding the event there will let everyone feel the warmth that the residents of the city exhibit,” he said.
