Two cops from each police station to be chosen for week-long programme at Police Lines,Sector 29
The policemen in the city are all set to be taught ‘soft skills’ so that they ‘behave gently’ with the residents approaching to them with complaints. Though no final dates have been finalised for the programme,the training branch of the Chandigarh Police has already discussed the proposal for ‘soft skill development programme’ with Chandigarh Inspector General of Police Pradeep Kumar Srivastava,who has also given his nod for the training.
“Like Army men,there is always a need for skill upgradation in the police force,so as to improve the working skill. They (training branch) have discussed the programme,” Srivastava said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Training) Suman Kumar said that as per the plan,two policemen from every police station will be called for a week-long programme in the Police Lines in Sector 29,where they will be taught communication skills,team building,time management,leadership qualities,stress management,conflict management,interpersonal communication and negotiating skills for developing soft skills.
“In the first phase police constables and head constables of the police station will be trained and later NGO’s (Non Gazetted Officers) like Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI),Sub Inspector and Inspector will be imparted training,” he said. The DSP said that they will be engaging faculties from Punjab University,Army officers,psychiatrists,yoga experts who will train the cops during the programme. Kumar said that through the programme every one posted in the police station will be imparted skill development training.
“The police station are where people pour in with complaints of all nature. The complainant is always already worried before coming to the police station. And if our police men behave with him in a better and cordial way,the people in general will have a good image about the police,” Kumar said. Another police officer said that the programme will also help in refreshing the roles and responsibilities of the policemen.
