Pre-monsoon showers make Ambala residents jittery as no flood-relief measures in place
With the onset of pre-monsoon showers that partially flooded the low-lying residential colonies,Ambala residents were panic-stricken. Although it rained just for a while,water entered many houses. Residents rued that since no flood control measures were taken by the administration,water had accumulated in the streets as it had no outlet.
Residents also complained to the newly elected members of the municipal corporation and the local MLA about the miseries that were created during monsoons. They said that showers for even short intervals inundated their colonies,as rain water accumulated due to the choked street drains and nullahs passing through the localities.
They also stated that requests made to the MC authorities had fallen on deaf ears. They also complained that heaps of garbage and filth were visible at every corner,which choked the drains,and sewage water mixed with rain water gave out a foul smell.
Irate residents have been demanding the newly elected Corporation members to undertake sanitation measures,especially to clean up the choked drains.
Sudhir Jaiswal from ward number 19 and Surinder Daboo from ward number 17 had undertaken door-to-door surveys to know the problems faced by the residents. Taking cue from the two corporators,similar exercises are being undertaken by other members.
Deputy Commissioner Shekhar Vidyarthi had convened a meeting of the district officers to decide flood control measures by their respective departments,a few days back. Sub-divisional magistrates of Barara and Naraingarh have been holding meetings to chalk out flood-relief measures. But,flood control measures were yet to be initiated,stated Ambala Cantonment MLA Anil Vij.
Vij added that the administration had not woken up,although the monsoon was fast approaching. “Flood-control measures were taken jointly by the district administration,Cantonment Board and Railways,since the main drains of Gudgudia Nala and Maheshnagar drain began from the cantonment area and terminated in the railway territory,” he added. Vij also complained that the three departments had not undertaken the work of clearing the drains choked with filth and garbage. He also appealed to the newly elected members of the MC to coordinate with the administration in stalling the floods,which had devastating effects in the past years.
Dust storm,rain brings down temperature
Chandigarh: The city recorded highest minimum temperatures over several years with 32.1 degrees Celsius,seven degrees above normal on Tuesday. Very little difference between the maximum and minimum temperature recorded. The maximum temperature recorded at 33.3 degrees Celsius,six degrees below normal.
A dust storm was experienced in the afternoon today accompanied by rain showers at some places in the city. The Meteorological Department officials have predicted rainfall on Wednesday as well. It is furthermore expected that pre-monsoon showers may occur this week.
The minimum temperature over the past few days has remained high adding to the woes of the residents. The humidity levels were less than yesterday and maximum humidity was recorded as 68 per cent.
