When Priya Sharma defeated fancied Tuba 25/14,14/18,23/18 in the semi-finals of women’s singles category,the improbable victory was just like winning the title for her. She knew she had left a lasting impression. With Tuba gone,she was very close to winning the title. However,she still had to beat Tuba’s elder sister,Farheen,in the final.
Showing amazing skills on the carrom board,Priya registered a 21/15,11/25,21/4 win over Farheen to claim the title in the 13th North Zone Carrom Tournament held at Srinagar,Jammu and Kashmir,from June 14 to 16.
With this,Chandigarh claimed gold,silver and bronze in women’s section. Sushila came fourth,Manu Gupra claimed the fifth spot while Gulshan secured the sixth spot in womens category.
Another city carrom player Nidhi Gupta bagged the junior girls’ title by beating her teammate Gurkiran 21/4. 18/7 in a lop-sided final. Earlier,Nidhi had defeated home favourite Ikra 24/0,15/0 in the semi-finals.
In the men’s singles category,Hassan of Chandigarh bagged the silver medal while Gagandeep clinched bronze medal for Chandigarh. Mohammad Talib came fifth while Saqib and Aarish finished at sixth and eighth spots respectively. In the junior boys,Mohammad Arib bagged a silver while Yishu Sharma claimed a bronze medal for Chandigarh.
Also,the Chandigarh men and women teams came up with spirited displays to clinch the team championships in both the categories,to make it a memorable outing.
