City Briefs: Earthquake measuring 4.9 rocks Hoshiarpur,tremors felt in city

Tremors were felt in the city on Wednesday evening around 8.23 pm,after an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale,hit the epicentre in Hoshiarpur.

Bar Council grants affiliation for UILS courses

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has accorded its approval of affiliation to BA / BCom,LLB five-year integrated courses at University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS),Panjab University (PU).

The BCI informed the varsity that two sections of 60 students in each section in each course have been sanctioned. Three sections of five-year integrated law course had been sanctioned earlier.

UILS Director Professor Sangeeta Bhalla informed that UILS had applied for the said affiliations in December 2010 and the inspection for the same by the BCI was conducted in August 2013.

Professor Bhalla attributed the achievement to the team work of the faculty members,co-operation and support from the PU administration and outstanding performance of UILS students.

Essay competition to be held at PU on Nov 11

Panjab University (PU) is organising an essay-writing competition on ‘Science and Society’ to commemorate the birth anniversary of independent India’s first Education Minister,Maulana Abul Kalam Azad,on November 11.

While the central government has declared November 11 as ‘Education Day’ in memory of Azad,the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all educational institutions to organise seminars and essay-writing competitions on ‘Science and Society’ to commemorate Azad’s birth anniversary.

PU has invited university students,including research scholars,to participate in the competition. Interested students can send an essay ranging between 2,000-3,000 words on the topic to the e-mail address ‘educationday@pu.ac.in’ before November 10,along with their contact details,class and department.

The varsity will also organise a thematic seminar by Professor DVS Jain of Department of Chemistry at 3 pm on November 11 at ICSSR complex and a lecture on the life of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad by Professor Nandita Shukla Singh.

Seminar on organ donation held at PU

A talk on ‘Awareness among Youth regarding Organ Donation’ was organised in the Department of Sociology,Panjab University (PU) on Wednesday,following which a number of students signed the donor card to be an organ donor.

The talk was delivered by Sudhir Deewan of Mohan Foundation,Chandigarh,with an idea to to generate awareness among the youth about the significance of organ donation. The overall scenario and myths associated with the subject were discussed. Professor Kiran Preet Kaur from the Sociology department also motivated students to join hands for the noble cause.

‘Include multiple sclerosis in Disabilities Act’

Neurologists in the city have demanded that Multiple Sclerosis,an inflammatory disease in which insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged,be included in the Disabilities Act.

Presently,the bill recognising the disease under the Persons with Disabilities (PWD),Act 1995 is pending in Parliament. The draft of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill 2012,prepared by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment recommends including Multiple Sclerosis,amongst others,to the standard seven disabilities recognised under the existing PWD Act 1995.

Sacred Heart wins bronze medal in Kho-Kho

Girls from the Sacred Heart School,Sector 26,won the bronze medal in the Kho-Kho state-level championship held recently at the Government Girls College (GCG),Sector 42. The team consisted of Dheerja Kalra,Jasmine,Pragati,Rajita,Vidhi,Sofia,Kirti,Sanya,Zenab,Venita,Sushila and Chahat.
