Chandigarh,is expected to be on the path of development and growth soon,if the draft master plan 2031,a vision document for holistic growth of the city,is anything to go by.
The draft plan,which was recently submitted,projects 16 lakh population in the city by 2030,and thus,has recommendations from the committee constituted for the master plan for future expansion,keeping in view the estimated population.
Some of the big projects that have found place in the plan are Museum of Knowledge in Capitol Complex,Sector 1,Modern Terminal Market near Sector 39,Integrated Warehousing Complex in Industrial Area,Modernised Transport Nagar and State of the Art Convention Centre (Nehru Centre for Performing Arts) in Sector 34,housing projects in southern sectors,wildlife corridor between the reserved forest area and the regulator end of the Sukhna Lake,and Paryatan Bhawan in Sector 17.
Two freight stations are also proposed to be set up in Industrial Area Phase-I,near the railway track.
Besides this,a warehouse will come up in Sector 56 (West).
The administration also plans to develop a commercial belt along the north of Vikas Marg and to shift the motor market from Sector 28 to Industrial Area Phase-II.
The plan proposes to upgrade and widen major highways connecting the Chandigarh Urban Complex,new bus terminals at Sector 31,Tribune Chowk,Manimajra and Sector 102,Mohali,to cater to the inter-state buses entering the city.
To ease the burden on the existing government hospitals in the city,a trauma centre with 300 beds has been proposed to be set up in Sector 53.
The other proposed initiatives include the shifting of the transport area from Sector 26 to Daria on 105 acres and enhancement of the airport.
To fulfil the residential needs,the draft plan proposes the expansion of Dhanas village on 39.33 acres. A piece of land measuring 92.47 acres has been proposed to rehabilitate slum dwellers and general housing in Maloya village.
In the plan,there is a provision for rental housing in Industrial Area Phase-I,as well.
Similarly,for commercial growth,the draft plan proposes to have marriage palaces in the city.
An area near Dadu Majra village will be partly developed to set up marriage palaces and other commercial establishments.
