Seemingly tempers are soaring in Chandigarh,going by the high instances of quarrels recorded among residents by the police this year.

Seemingly tempers are soaring in Chandigarh,going by the high instances of quarrels recorded among residents by the police this year. Amongst the non-heinous crimes,maximum number of complaints registered in 2012 are of quarrels,a total of 11,378,followed by auto theft (460) and gambling (458). The FIRs are highest from the southern sectors,with 1,667 complaints from the Sector 39 police station,1,473 from Sector 34 and over 1,200 complaints each from Sector 31 and Manimajra.

In sector-wise distribution of crimes,the southern sectors and colonies in East of the city have recorded the maximum instances of crime. The police station in sectors 31,34,39 and Manimajra have the maximum number of cases registered in the last seven months. Sectors 31,47,48,Ram Darbar,Industrial Area-II,Hallomajra,Karsan,Airfield and Behlana have 1,242 quarrels,70 gambling and six sexual harassment incidents.

“The southern parts have higher population density and in the east,colonies like Indira Nagar,Mauli Jagran are hubs for notorious activities,” said DSP (PCR) Roshan Lal. Sector 17 has recorded the maximum number of sexual harassment cases (37) and and a high figure of auto theft (68). Industrial area has registered 31 cases of sexual harassment while there are no complaints of snatching or burglary.

“Some crimes can be seen as area-specific. The Industrial Area has large number of liquor shops and people purchase and start drinking inside their vehicles there itself. Most of the complaints are lodged by the owners of the liquor vends themselves,” said an official at the police control room (PCR).

The eastern parts are worst affected by incidents of gambling with Manimajra,Kishangarh,Railway Colony,Mauli Jagran, Indira Colony having the maximum cases (95),followed by 72 cases in Sectors 26,27,28,Grain Market and Bapu Dham Colony and 70 cases in Sector 31,47,48 and the adjoining villages.

The southern sectors have recorded maximum cases of snatching and burglary. Sectors and colonies falling under the Sector 31 police station have maximum instances of burglaries (35),way higher in comparison to Sectors 3,17 and 19. Police station-3 has recorded no instances of snatching or burglary. Sectors 3,11,17,19,26 and adjoining sectors have the least instances of drinking at public places,gambling and burglary.

Going by the total figures,the second highest instances of crime across the city that have been recorded are 460 cases of auto theft,followed by gambling (458) and sexual harassment (234).
