If you are planning to pay your traffic violation fine,be prepared to spend some more time than usual as the payment process would not be a cakewalk as before. So before you can proceed to the payment counter, attending the screening of a 25-30 minute film on road safety will be mandatory.
The idea of Chandigarh Police was mooted after a substantial increase in the number of traffic violations. Police had such a system in place some years back but that was discontinued due to some reason.
However, now a projector is being installed in the conference hall at the Traffic Lines,Sector 29,where the films would be screened for violators.
Once the system is in place, watching the movie/ documentary will be the only ticket through which one would be able to proceed to the payment counter where the fine is deposited.
At present, one can go straight to the payment counter where fines are accepted. The violators have an easy way out and, thus, the revival of the old method was mooted.
Speaking to Newsline,Chandigarh Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Alok Kumar said,By showing short films and documentaries,we want to educate people about road safety and traffic rules. Any person who comes to pay a fine for traffic violations will first be made to watch these films, whether he likes it or not.
He added that the films would be used in both ways – as a deterrent and also as an educational device.
Apart from this, the Traffic Police would be adding another mobile exhibition van to its fleet. The mobile van regularly visits schools, colleges and residential areas to educate people about road safety. At present, the police have one one such van.
Traffic violations have increased at an alarming rate.
