In Chandigarh,it seems that the best place to achieve a size zero figure or acquire bulging biceps is at home. Trainers and fitness equipment sellers say more and more of the city’s fitness freaks are opting to install their own gyms at home and are employing exclusive personal trainers.

20-year-old college student,Pratibha Bhaskar is among those who have set up home gyms and have hired trainers. “ The comfort of working out at home,in your own space is incomparable. At the gym,one has to wait for their turn at a specific machine,or even have to look for a trainer to guide you through the workout sessions. At home, there is no such thing, one can workout at one’s own leisure and that too for as many hours as one wants,” she smiles.

Says the proprietor of Metro Fitness,Rajesh Bajaj: “On an average we sell 100-110 fitness equipment a month from cross trainers, cycles to treadmills, among others. Paucity of time and increase in the prices of fuel are the major reasons why people are setting up home gyms”.

Rajesh Mahajan,Director of Lifeline..Way to fitness adds: “A personal gym provides convenience as far as time and individual requirements are concerned. I can guarantee that the people who work-out at home gyms get better results and lose more weight in comparison to the ones who work out in full-fledged ones. Better results are achieved by appointing personal trainers as through a personal trainer one receives proper personal attention”.

While the setting up of a home gym can cost anything between Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh depending on the equipment bought,a basic home gym, which consists of an upright bicycle, bench, bars and dumbbells, can be set up for Rs 50,000. In all there are about eight to ten fitness stores in Chandigarh.

Personal trainers on the other hand, are available for anything between Rs 5,000 and Rs 25,000 per month. Says Garry,a personal trainer: “People today are becoming aware of the benefits of gymming. A large number of people in Tricity have set up home gyms. My clients include bureaucrats, businessmen and some housewives. I charge Rs 8,500 per month and provide training for five days a week”.

“ The life of people today is so busy that they hardly have any time to spare, this is the main reason why people are turning towards home gyms in colossal numbers. My day begins at six in the morning. I provide training to 15 to 20 people everyday,” commented Wilson,a city-based personal trainer.

Personal trainers Sudhir and Vikram also echoed similar sentiments. A Chandigarh- based personal trainer divulged: “A top business tycoon pays me Rs 25,000 per month to provide him fitness training. My clients include some women who engage me for garnering a ‘size-zero figure’. While there are youngsters who yearn for bulging biceps”.
