International flights, aerobridges, visual docking guidance system, escalators, food court, shopping arcade — all this and more will be available at the Chandigarh Airport by the end of December. The new, fully air-conditioned terminal building at the airport will cover an area of about 12,150 square metres and will be able to handle 500 passengers at a time, said airport authorities. The estimated cost of the entire project is around Rs 90 crore.
International flights with daily, weekly and bi-weekly frequency to Dubai and other parts of the Middle East,South East Asia and Europe will also start operating in January, provided any airline approaches the airport.
Elaborating on the new projects,Chandigarh Airport Director Suneel Dutt said there would be a plethora of business opportunities with the coming up of a food court, shopping arcade, car park etc. This would not only facilitate the passengers but also provide an opportunity for the vendors to present their brands before the target clientele. Tenders for a few of the facilities such as airport entry ticket, passenger baggage trolleys and improvised car parking management have also been floated to make them functional from the new terminal building.
These will be available shortly on AAI’s official website,www.aai.aero.
Suneel Dutt added: “We expect construction of the new terminal building will be completed soon and it will become operational. At present, the Chandigarh airport is handling 11 flights per day with four domestic airlines: Jet Airways,Indian Airlines,Go Air and Kingfisher Airlines operating.”
Work regarding installation of a new Instrument Landing System has been undertaken by the Airports Authority of India and the Indian Air Force; it is expected to be completed before the onset of winter, said officials.
Last year,Fly Dubai airline had expressed interest to establish an air link between Chandigarh and Dubai; however,it was cancelled at the last moment due to non-availability of infrastructure, like segregated area for international passengers, immigration officials and security staff apart from night-landing facility.
