A dramatic scene unfolded on the Chandigarh–Ambala Highway near Palm Resort on Monday afternoon when the Haryana Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team suddenly halted a Haryana Roadways bus and arrested five alleged robbers on board.
All five accused had allegedly carried out a violent dacoity earlier the same morning in a house preparing for a wedding in Karnal. According to officials, the men held the family hostage at gunpoint for nearly 45 minutes, forced the women to remove their jewellery, and looted cash and wedding ornaments. When the groom resisted, the assailants shot him and while escaping, fired five rounds to scare locals.
After committing the crime, the robbers reportedly abandoned their car (WagonR) in Haryana and boarded a Haryana Roadways bus to flee toward Chandigarh. The Haryana CIA received intelligence on their movement and set up a trap outside Palm Resort in Zirakpur. As soon as the bus stopped, police teams moved in, entered the bus, and apprehended all five suspects. A pistol and other incriminating items were recovered from them.
Karnal police traced the accused within three hours of the incident and coordinated the operation in the Derabassi–Zirakpur region, leading to the arrests.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Rajiv, alias Raja, a resident of Tajganj, Ludhiana; Deepak, alias Harry, a resident of Ludhiana; Prince Kumar, Amritpal and Abhishek, all from Shimalapuri, Ludhiana.
A case has been registered against the accused at the Civil Lines police station, Karnal under BNS Sections 310(2), 311, 109, 333, 135, 61(2) and the Arms Act.
Meanwhile, Punjab Police’s CIA (Kharar) in-charge, Inspector Harminder Singh, stated that his unit had no prior intimation about the operation. “Haryana CIA did not inform us or coordinate with us for this arrest,” he clarified.
ASP Gazalpreet Kaur said that local Punjab Police are verifying whether these accused were involved in any crime within Punjab. She added that police from both states are now coordinating for further action.
