Subverting the decision taken earlier, the Arts,Culture and Sports Committee of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation,in a meeting on Sunday, decided not to hold Children’s Day celebrations at Nehru Park as has been the practice since 2009.

Instead, the committee has chosen Dadumajra as the destination for holding the celebrations. The meeting also saw arguments over the selection of the chief guest.

The ongoing discord between the Congress councillors is being touted as the reason behind the decision taken by the committee.

The Children’s Day function have been held at Nehru Park in Sector 22 for several years as the park was created at the spot where Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru delivered a speech. The area councillor,Pardeep Chhabra is from the Congress.

With November 14 approaching,a proposal was brought before the committee for holding the celebrations at Nehru Park. However,it was reportedly met with opposition from members of the committee, which is headed by Congress councillor Gurbax Rawat.

Another councillor of the party Sat Prakash Aggarwal, who is the area councillor of Dadumajra,is also part of the committee. Apart from them, two nominated councillors and one from the BJP attended the meeting. Both Chhabra and Aggarwal were contenders for the Mayoral elections this year.

Rawat said that a proposal for holding Children’s Day celebrations at Nehru Park was brought up for discussion in the meeting. “The members opined that the venue should be changed this year as every year the celebration is held at Nehru Park. The members wanted that such an event be held at a slum or colony so that the children there are encouraged. The prize money would mean more to these children. The previous committee had taken a decision to hold the event at Nehru Park. The decision could be changed,” she said.

Rawat further said she proposed that since the event was to be held at Nehru Park, local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal be made the chief guest as he has done a lot for removal of slums in the city, while BJP councillor Saurabh Joshi demanded the UT Adviser be invited as chief guest.

However, according to Rawat, the BJP has a habit of not participating in any events of the MC as has been witnessed over the past few months.

Meanwhile,Aggarwal said that it was not his proposal to hold celebrations at Dadumajra. “The members of the committee felt that some other place should be considered for holding the event. Several locations were discussed. Finally it was felt that Dadumajra would be better than other locations,” he said.
