Child dies,17 others hurt as school vans collide

Kiranjot Kaur,a class IV student of DAV Public School,died and 17 other students were injured in a head-on collision between two school vans.

Kiranjot Kaur,a class IV student of DAV Public School,died and 17 other students were injured in a head-on collision between two school vans at the Ranjit Avenue D Block roundabout this morning.

While the injured were all inside a van carrying students of Army Public School and DAV Public School,the other van had teachers of Sri Guru Harkrishan School. The van carrying students hit a divider on the road and turned turtle after the collision and its roof got crushed to the level of the seats.

Witnesses said the vans collided as neither of the drivers slowed down for the other to pass. Five students were reported to be seriously injured in the collision. Their van was carrying 42 students against its capacity of 30. The children were taken out of the van by passers-by and policemen from the adjacent post.

Kiranjot’s parents rushed to the spot from their village Sahnsara but were informed their daughter was brought dead to hospital.

“All the children with multiple injuries on their heads,legs and arms were admitted in a local private hospital,” said Additional Commissioner of Police AS Chahal.

The ACP said both drivers (registration numbers PB-11-Q-5411 and PB-02-BK-9218),Jaswinder Singh and Navtej Singh,had been speeding. They were arrested and booked for negligent driving.

“Our child is seriously injured. We want strict action to be taken against the drivers,” said Balkar Singh,relative of an injured child undergoing treatment for head injuries.
