The Punjab Police and Chandigarh Police found themselves at loggerheads Tuesday over the custody of a Rajasthan native, who is accused of filing his Rajya Sabha polls nomination with forged signatures.

Navneet Chaturvedi, national president of Janata Party and a resident of Jaipur, was booked Monday in Punjab’s several districts after AAP MLAs alleged their signatures were forged nomination papers submitted by him. In a parallel move, Chaturvedi sought protection from Chandigarh Police, which was granted on Monday night.

The confrontation between the two police teams, one led by an SP from Punjab’s Ropar and another by SHO of Sector 3 Police Station, Chandigarh, took place at Sukhna Lake Tuesday when the UT Police team was returning with Chaturvedi from Punjab Vidhan Sabha after his nomination papers for the October 24 Rajya Sabha polls were rejected during scrutiny.

SHO Narinder Patial personally escorted Chaturvedi to the Vidhan Sabha and when the team was on way back, a team of Ropar police chased their vehicle and intercepted them near Sukhna Lake. The Ropar team was led by SP Gurdeep Singh Gosal. There were verbal exchanges between the two sides with the SP demanding custody of Chaturvedi and the SHO refusing to give it to him.

SSP, Chandigarh, Kanwardeep Kaur reached the spot with reinforcements and told the Punjab Police officer that the custody will not be handed over at that spot and they need to reach Chandigarh Police headquarters in Sector 9. A video of the incident was circulated widely on social media.

A large contingent of Chandigarh Police was deployed outside the headquarters, while the Ropar team waited at a distance. Ropar SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana later arrived for discussions with Chandigarh’s Director General of Police (DGP), which were continuing when this report was filed.
