TWO PERSONS, including a 85-year-old lawyer, were killed while one seriously injured when a PRTC bus hit their Activa scooter at Sector 46/47/48/49 light point around 2 pm on Sunday. The accused bus driver was arrested from the spot and later released on bail.
According to the police, the deceased were identified as Madan Lal (85), a resident of Sector 47, and Sunil (21), a resident of Jagatpura village in Mohali. The injured was identified as Shivam, 15. The trio were standing at the light point when the bus hit their Activa from the rear. All the three were taken to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors declared both Madan Lal and Sunil dead on arrival.
Both Sunil and Shivam were labourers and Madan Lal, who was a practising lawyer, was bringing them to his home in Sector 47 for some work. Sunil and Shivam rode pillion on the Activa and did not wear helmets.
The police officials of Sector 49 police station said that they had arrested the bus driver identified as Sukhwinder Singh. The driver was later released on bail. The bus driver was said to be driving at a high speed. He could not see the trio standing at the light point and hit the Activa scooter.
Three persons have been killed within a span of one week at the light point. A 22-year-old man was killed in a road accident last week when a speeding car hit his bike at this light point.
