THE CHANDIGARH Police on Friday arrested a tutor for allegedly raping a 15-year-old minor girl “multiple times” at his house at Sarangpur village earlier this week. Police said that the accused had been arrested from Gurgaon.
As per the police, a case was registered earlier this week under sections 341, 376(2) and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 4, 6, 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) at Sarangpur police station against the tutor identified as 42-year-old Ashok Sharma. The victim is a class X student.
Police officials said that the family of the victim approached the police on Tuesday. The accused had fled the city after switching off his mobile phone.
“His whereabouts were not known to anyone. Police immediately swung into action and raided different suspected hideouts of the accused but to no avail,” said a police statement.
The police said that they got some clues about the accused that he was hiding in Gurgaon, Haryana. “A police party was dispatched and the accused was arrested from his cousin’s house early on Friday morning,” the police said.
A police official said that the accused had been living in the city for the last three years and originally belonged to Ludhiana. “In the city, he worked as a tailor and gave tutions to minors,” the police official said.
During interrogation, the police said, the accused revealed he was also involved in a dowry death case at Phagwara. “On further verification from Phagwara City police station, it came to notice that he was declared a proclaimed offender,” the statement said.
SHO of city’s women police station in Sector 17 Harjeet Kaur told Chandigarh Newsline that there could be more such victims at his tuition centre. “This victim was raped multiple times. We are investigating it further because the accused was giving tuition to minors only and there could be more such victims,” she said, adding that the accused had studied at a convent school.
