Chandigarh | City Beautiful, with awful sanitation?

Every election in the area is fought on clearing the dump but soon after the poll results, the promises evaporate.

From a cricket ground to a football ground to a leisure park, almost everything has been announced one after the other by political parties for the dumping ground at Dadumajra. Sadly, as residents continue to suffer in the choked air every second, the unfulfilled promises run deep every year. It is 2024 and residents of this area continue to wake up to see mountains of waste instead of the promised playing fields.

The word “sanitation” strikes every Chandigarh citizen when he or she is asked about the priority they would like their Member of Parliament to have. Even as Chandigarh bounced back to 11th rank last year from 66 in 2021 in the Swachh Survekshan, the fact that Delhi was declared cleaner than the City Beautiful still upsets the residents. And who can forget about the blot of “dumping ground” when the word sanitation comes to mind — when it should be the first to be resolved if the city really needs to get clean.
