The NAKSHA (National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations) project has taken up the villages of Attawa, Burail, Kajheri, Palsora and Sarangpur in Chandigarh, and a door-to-door survey of land and properties is set to commence shortly as part of the scheme’s pilot phase.

The NAKSHA project is a city survey initiative spearheaded by the Department of Land Resources (DoLR), under the Ministry of Rural Development.

Chandigarh Administration has issued a public notice informing residents in the villages about the upcoming survey and seeking their cooperation.

Under the exercise, the survey teams will visit households to verify ownership documents.

The administration has requested the residents to show the original copy of the approved property documents for on-the-spot verification. Officials clarified that the documents will be uploaded digitally and returned immediately to the owner, as mentioned in the notice by the UT Administration.

The project has been launched as part of the Centre’s broader efforts to modernise land governance through advanced geospatial technologies.

Built upon the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme (DILRMP), it uses drone surveys, high-resolution imagery and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping to accurately delineate land parcels and link them with ownership details.

An official said the urban villages often face issues such as outdated manual records, overlapping claims and unclear property boundaries, leading to prolonged disputes and transaction complications. By digitising and geo-referencing land parcels, the project will bring transparency and legal clarity to property ownership.

Officials also said the updated and clean records will make buying, selling and leasing of properties faster, safer and fraud-free. The digitised database will also ease up loan approvals, as ownership verification will become more efficient for banks and financial institutions.

In addition, the initiative is expected to simplify property transactions, improve access to credit and support e-governance initiatives. Accurate land data will assist in planning infrastructure projects and policy interventions more effectively. The authorities believe the streamlined land records will also boost real estate activity and infrastructure investments in the area.

The records prepared under the project will be made accessible online enabling residents to access it anytime.
